Memorandtnn CONSENT To: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members City Administrator From: Terry Stang, Fire Chief Date: 5/12/2003 Re: Hiring of Replacement Fire Fighters INTRODUCTION: In the 2003 City of Shakopee Annual Budget for the fire department, we are allocated 50 firefighters on the Wages and Benefits line item. During the past year we have lost firefighters due to retirement, job relocation, and fmding out during their probationary year that being a firefighter is not for them. We currently are short four firefighters from the allotted 50. BACKGROUND: In the previous years, the Fire Department has worked with the Scott County Personnel Dept. to advertise the position and receive applications, review and rate the applicants and give us the results for further review and 'testing. We request that the Shakopee Fire Department and the Scott County Personnel Department advertise to fill the four vacant positions. This will maintain the level of service for response to fire calls and accidents. It will also give us time to train these new firefighters so they have the knowledge and capability to be an exceptional firefighter when the addition of a third fire station and an expected turnover of senior firefighters occur. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the Officers of the Shakopee Fire Department to work with Scott County Personnel Department to advertise and recruit applicants for the position of firefighter with the City of Shakopee. 1
