SUBJECT: Donations to the Shakopee Fire Department
DATE: May 14, 2003
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to accept the donations from the Shakopee Jaycees and Wal-Mart
both in the amount of $1 ,500, which would be used to purchase equipment and
educational materials to by used by the Shakopee Fire Department.
BACKGROUND:
On December 8,2002, the Shakopee Jaycees donated $1,500 to the Shakopee Fire
Department for their help at the Derby Days celebration, and on March 19, 2003, Wal-
Mart also donated $1,500 to the Shakopee Fire Department to help buy supplies for Fire
Prevention Week.
The policy for donations approved by the Council on November 6, 2002 requires a 2/3
vote to accept cash donations over $1,000.
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, adopt the following resolution:

RESOLUTION NO. 5895
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA,
ACCEPTING A $1,500 DONATION FROM THE SHAKOPEE JAYCEES AND
A $1,500 DONATION FROM W AL-MART
WHEREAS, on November 6, 2002, the City Council adopted Resolution No.
5794, which established procedure relating to the receipt of gifts and donations by the
City; and
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 5794 specifies that cash donations of over $1,000
shall be accepted by resolution ofthe City Council, and shall require a two-thirds
majority of the Council for acceptance; and
WHEREAS, the Shakopee Jaycees and Wal-Mart have each generously donated
$1,500, which will be used by the Shakopee Fire Department for equipment and
educational materials; and
WHEREAS, such a donation will enhance the safety and overall quality of life in
Shakopee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, that the cash donations of $1 ,500 from both the
Shakopee Jaycees and Wal-Mart be gratefully accepted; and
FURTHER, the $3,000 shall be used to provide educational materials and
equipment for the Shakopee Fire Department.
FURTHER, that City staff is directed to send a letter to the donor, acknowledging
receipt of the gift and expressing the appreciation of the City Council.
Adopted in adjourned regular session of the City Council of the City of Shakopee,
Minnesota, held this 20th day of May, 2003.
