Library Building Cabling \5,~, ~ City of Shakopee CONSENT Memorandum TO: Mayor & City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Kim Henke, IT Coordinator Tracy Schaefer, Assistant to the City Administrator SUBJECT: Library Building Cabling DATE: June 25, 2003 Introduction Cabling is required in the new library building for all its telecommunications, video and computer needs. Background Staffhas received state bid quotes from cabling companies to install the cabling system at the new library building. The main function of the cabling system will be to support the new phone and computer systems. Since the City has installed the INET, it is important to install high grade cabling, Category 6, to ensure the highest performance. Category 6 cabling will allow the library to move forward as new technologies are developed. Video cabling will also be installed. Cabling was not included as part ofthe library building original proposal; however, monies were allocated in the contingency fund to pay for such cabling. This was done, in advance, to allow staffthe flexibility to select the latest technology available. After reviewing bids, staff has selected FS Technology Group to install the new cabling system. City Council awarded the contract to FS Technology to install Category 6 cabling in the new Police Department Building. The Shakopee School District has also contracted with FS Technology with great success. Since FS Technology has worked with the School District and Police Department, they are also familiar with the City's INET, which is critical to library technical operations. Regardless ofINET operation, this equipment and cabling is necessary. Budget Impact FS Technology Group is an authorized state bid contractor, thus has been previously approved by the state for municipal contracting. The overall bid price includes labor and materials. Materials to complete this project range from the cabling to termination equipment. Labor and materials should not exceed $32,265.05. These funds will be taken from the library building contingency fund. 1 Action Council should, if they concur, by motion authorize the appropriate City staff, to enter into a purchase and installation agreement of cabling for the new library building with FS Technology for an amount not to exceed $32,265.05. 2
