FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Supervisor
DATE: June 17, 2003
SUBJECT: Purchase of Portable Lift for cars and light trucks
INTRODUCTION:
The 2003 General Fund Budget for the Shop Division of Public Works requests the
purchase of a Portable Lift or "Hoist" under Capital Expenditures. The Shop Division did
budget $6,000.00 for this purchase.
BACKGROUND:
The Shop Division of Public Works has requested to go forward with the purchase of the
portable lift. This purchase will enable the mechanics to be more efficient with less
vehicle downtime, by reducing the waiting period to use the existing vehicle lifts.
Currently the Shop Division uses two in ground vehicle lifts, one for cars and light trucks
and the other for heavier trucks and equipment. Along with the cities growing fleet of
vehicles there is also an increase in the hours and mileage on each vehicle, which relates
to the need of providing more preventative maintenance, Simply put, this lift will add to
efficiency by allowing the mechanics to service more vehicles at one time.
The Shop Division has researched various portable vehicle lifts from Westside
Equipment, NAP A, and Motor Parts. Staff has also talked to other cities and shops to
determine which lift is the most 'user' friendly with the best quality construction. Staff
has determined that the Rotary Model SP012 12,000 lb. Two-Post Lift from Westside
Equipment is the best value at a cost of$5,635.00. The closest comparable lift from
NAP A has a cost of $5,645.00.
ALTERNA TIVES:
1. Purchase one Rotary 12,000 lb. Two-Post Lift from Westside Equipment for the
cost of$5,635.00.
2. Deny the request.
3. Table for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends alternative No.1.
ACTION REOUESTED:
Motion to authorize staff to purchase one Rotary 12,000 lb. Two-Post Lift from Westside
Equipment for the cost of$5,635.00.
