INTRODUCTION
The City Council is asked to adopt Resolution No. 5945, a Resolution accepting a $4,500
grant from the Minnesota ReLeaf Grant Program for the City's Oak Wilt Management
Program.
BACKGROUND
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has approved a grant amount of $4.500 for the
City of Shako pee's Oak Wilt Management Program. The City has participated in this program
since 1999.
The purpose of the program is to provide fmancial assistance to landowners to control the spread
of oak wilt. To control the spread ofthe disease the City conducts annual inspections, root
severing and/or removal of infected trees. Root severing costs are shared with the State (50%),
the City (25%) and the homeowner (25%). The homeowner is responsible for all tree removal
costs. This year, if root severing is not an option, the City may elect to use some of the funds for
injections.
ACTION REQUESTED
Offer Resolution No, 5945, a Resolution accepting a $4,500 grant from the Minnesota ReLeaf
Grant Program for the City of Shakopee' s Oak Wilt Management Program and move for its
adoption.

RESOLUTION NO. 5945
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, ACCEPTING A
GRANT FROM THE MINNESOTA RELEAF GRANT PROGRAM
WHEREAS: Oak Wilt is a vascular disease caused by a fungus that makes oak trees
rapidly wilt and die; and
WHEREAS: inspecting and identifying sites where the disease may exist will help in the
prognosis and treatment of oak wilt; and
WHEREAS: the City can take proactive approach to the spread of the disease by
requiring residents to remove dead and diseased trees and offering financial help to
residents in the containment ofthe fungus that kills oak trees by root severing; and
WHEREAS: residents could pay 25%, the City 25% and the State 50% ofthe cost for
root severing or, is special cases, conduct tree iI1iections if root severing is not an option
to save a tree (s).
NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that the City of Shako pee hereby accepts a
$4,500 grant from the Minnesota ReLeafGrant Program for the City's Oak Wilt
Management Program.
