Subject: Acceptance of Monetary Donation From Shakopee Crime Prevention, Inc.

INTRODUCTION
City Council is asked to accept a donation of $5000 from Shakopee Crime Prevention,
Inc. on behalf of the Police Department, which would be used towards the purchase of a
speed-monitoring trailer.
BACKGROUND
Shakopee Crime Prevention, Inc. has set a goal for the last year and one-half to assist the
Shakopee Police Department with the purchase of a speed-monitoring trailer. The board
members realize the importance of educating the public on traffic safety and have held
fundraisers to raise monies towards this purchase.
ALTERNATIVES
1. Accept the donation from Shakopee Crime Prevention, Inc.
2. Do not accept the donation.
3. Table for further information from staff.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends alternative one.
ACTION REQUESTED
If City Council concurs, it should, by motion adopt Resolution Number 5940, a resolution
of the City of Shakopee, Minnesota, accepting a $5000 donation from Shakopee Crime
Prevention, Inc.
RESOLUTION NO. 5940
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, ACCEPTING A
$5000 DONATION FROM SHAKOPEE CRIME PREVENTION, INC. TO BE USED
TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF A SPEED-MONITORING TRAILER.
WHEREAS, on November 6,2002, the City Council adopted Resolution No.
5794, which established procedure relating to the receipt of gifts and donations by the
City; and
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 5794 specifies that donations valued over $1,000
shall be accepted by resolution of the City Council, and shall require a two-thirds
majority of the City Council for acceptance; and
WHEREAS, Shakopee Crime Prevention, Inc. has generously donated $5000,
which will be used towards the purchase of a speed-monitoring trailer.
WHEREAS, such a donation will assist with the education of the public on traffic
safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, that the donation of $5000 from Shakopee Crime
Prevention, Inc. is gratefully accepted; and
FURTHER, that City staff is directed to send a letter to the donor, acknowledging
receipt of the gift and expressing the appreciation of the City Council.
Adopted in adjourned regular session of the City Council of the City of Shakopee,
Minnesota, held this 2nd day of September, 2003.
