City Hall Closing-December 26th /5; Fa 0, CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: City Hall Closing - December 26th DATE: October 2, 2003 INTRODUCTION: The Council is asked to consider officially closing City Hall on the day after Christmas, December 26th. BACKGROUND: Per policy, City Hall will close for business at noon on Christmas Eve Day. It is closed on December 25th, and would normally reopen for regular business on December 26th. Because December 26th is a Friday this year, there have already been requests by employees to have that day off, so that they may take a long holiday weekend. In the past, that has led to difficulties in staffing each department, although that has not presented many problems, as business is normally very slow that day. Previously, City Councils have authorized City Hall to be closed on certain days, such as in the circumstances described in this memo. So as not to penalize employees who either do not wish to take the time off, or have insufficient paid leave accumulated (comp time and/or vacation), employees are given the option of coming into work. Ifthey do choose to work when the building is closed to the public, they work on projects; they do not deal with "walk-in" traffic. RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that Council authorize City Hall to be closed on Friday, December 26th. This would not apply to the office functions ofthe Police Department or Community Center. ACTION REQUIRED: Ifthe Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize City Hall to be officially closed on Friday, December 26th. '1^"...~j2JJl,~A...tuU Mark McNeill City Administrator
