TO: Mayor & City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Bruce Loney, Public Works Director SUBJECT: Hiring of Maintenance Operator DATE: November 5, 2003 INTRODUCTION: Public Works maintenance operator candidates have been interviewed from the Scott County certification list to fill the position that was included in the 2003 Budget and authorized by the City Council at its March 18, 2003 meeting. The purpose of this agenda item is to recommend to the City Council to authorize the hiring of Jamie Theis to this position. BACKGROUND: Included in the 2003 Budget are 13 public works maintenance operator positions for the Public Works Department. A position was made vacant by the hiring of Duane Toenyan to the lead building worker position. Staff utilizes Scott County Personnel Department for the selection process and in determining an interview list. The Interview Panel consisted of the Public Works Director, Public Works Supervisor and Street Lead Person. After reviewing the results of the interview application and reference check, the recommendation from the Interview Panel is to hire Jamie Theis and the anticipated starting date is November 24, 2003. This would be contingent upon a successful pre- employment physical and background check. The budget impact would be the advertised starting salary for the public works maintenance operator position listed at $16.132 per hour. This is a non-exempt position and the employee is eligible for overtime pay. Mr. Theis has agreed to the starting wage of $16.132 per hour, Step 1 of the 2003 Public Works Union Pay Schedule. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the hiring of Jamie Theis to the public works maintenance operator position. ACTION REQUESTED: Move to authorize the hiring of Jamie Theis as public works maintenance operator position and to be hired at Step 1, $16.132 per hour, of the 2003 Public Works Union Pay Schedule, effective November 24, 2003 and subject to a successful pre-employment physical and background check. ~tl Bruce Loney Public Works lrector BUpmp HIRE 1 0-20-03
