Police Department
Memorandum
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Officer Cody Homer @J
SUBJECT: Mayor's Report - Presentation of Multi Housing Certificate
DATE: December 9,2003
INTRODUCTION:
Police Department staff is requesting that the Mayor, along with Officer Cody Homer,
present a Crime Free Multi-Housing program certificate to the Scott County Housing and
Redevelopment Authority (HRA), for completing all phases of this program.
BACKGROUND:
In years past, the Police Department receives numerous calls for service to rental
properties within the city. In an effort to educate property management and reduce the
amount of these calls and crime in Shakopee, Police Department staff has utilized the
internationally recognized Crime Free Multi-Housing program. This particular program
was instituted in 2002. Scott County Housing and Redevelopment Authority has worked
diligently with the Shakopee Police Department in an effort to reduce crime in their rental
buildings.
Bluff Avenue Urban Village Townhomes, owned and operated by Scott County HRA,
was the first out of seventy- five, (4+ units), properties within the city to complete all
phases of the program. The phases of this training include one-day management training,
security updates to the building, and hosting a tenant meeting focusing on working with
the police. By completing all phases of the program they have reduced the likelihood of
criminal activity occurring on their property.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the Mayor assist Officer Cody Homer in the presentation.
