Authorization to Hire One Police Officer 15: E .1- · CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSEf~T Police Department Memorandum TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Bob Forberg, Sergeant 6r SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer DATE: February 25, 2004 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire one police officer, to fill a vacancy that was created by a voluntary resignation. BACKGROUND: In January 2004, Officer Russell Bradley voluntarily resigned from his position with the Shakopee Police Department, creating a vacancy in a budgeted position. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that created the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top three candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil Service Commission. . Carl Bock . PaulO 'Hanlon . Kevin Olson Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. BUDGET IMPACT: Funds exist in the police department's budget and there is a need to fill the vacant police officer position. The position will be compensated at an entry-level rate. The current labor agreement establishes $3,358.58 per month as Step 1 wage for a probationary police officer. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Do not authorize the hire. 2. Authorize hire. 3. Table and provide staff with additional direction. RECOMMENDATION: Alternative #2. Staff recommends Council authorize the hiring Kevin Olson as a probationary police officer. ACTION REQUESTED: Ifthe Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of Kevin Olson as a probationary police officer, at Step 1 of the current labor contract, at a monthly rate of $3,358.58, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment medical and psychological examinations.
