CITY OF SHAK'OPEE Memorandum To: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator From: Jamie Polley, Director of Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Subject: 2009 Arbor Day Proclamation Meeting Date: April 21, 2009 INTRODUCTION The Mayor is asked to read the 2009 Arbor Day Proclamation. DISCUSSION Arbor Day is celebrated worldwide. Communities that celebrate Arbor Day and provide ongoing care for the City's urban forest are eligible to become Tree City USAs. The Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Director submitted the Tree City USA application for the City in 2008. The Department of Natural Resources will notify the City in late spring of Tree City USA status. This will be the first year the City has submitted the Tree City USA application. The Arbor Day Proclamation is a requirement as part of the Tree City USA application. The proclamation brings awareness to the community about the history and importance of Arbor Day. It also encourages our citizens to celebrate Arbor Day in conjunction with the City. The City celebrated Arbor Day in 2008 by holding the first Arbor Day tree sale. The City will again celebrate Arbor Dayan April 25, 2009 by holding an Arbor Day tree sale and a city-wide park clean up. VISIONING RELATIONSHIOP B. High Quality ofUfe ACTION REQUESTED: The Mayor is asked to read the attached Arbor Day Proclamation during the Mayor's report declaring Saturday, April 25 2009 Arbor Day in the City of Shakopee. CITY OF SHAKOPEE OFFICE OF THE MAYOR ACTION PROCLAMING APRIL 25, 2009 AS ARBOR DAY WHEREAS, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and WHEREAS, this holiday, called ARBOR DAY, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and WHEREAS, ARBOR DAY is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and WHEREAS, trees can reduce erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife, and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for homes, fuel for fires and countless other wood products, and WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas and beautify our community, and WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of spiritual renewal. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN J. SCHMITT, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, do hereby declare Saturday, April 25, 2009 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Shakopee, and urge citizens to celebrate ARBOR DA Y and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and FURTHER, I urge citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well being of this and future generations.
