CITY OF SHAK'OPEE
Memorandum
To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Jamie Polley, Director of Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources
Subject: 2009 Arbor Day Proclamation
Meeting Date: April 21, 2009
INTRODUCTION
The Mayor is asked to read the 2009 Arbor Day Proclamation.
DISCUSSION
Arbor Day is celebrated worldwide. Communities that celebrate Arbor Day and provide ongoing
care for the City's urban forest are eligible to become Tree City USAs. The Parks, Recreation &
Natural Resources Director submitted the Tree City USA application for the City in 2008. The
Department of Natural Resources will notify the City in late spring of Tree City USA status. This
will be the first year the City has submitted the Tree City USA application.
The Arbor Day Proclamation is a requirement as part of the Tree City USA application. The
proclamation brings awareness to the community about the history and importance of Arbor Day.
It also encourages our citizens to celebrate Arbor Day in conjunction with the City. The City
celebrated Arbor Day in 2008 by holding the first Arbor Day tree sale. The City will again
celebrate Arbor Dayan April 25, 2009 by holding an Arbor Day tree sale and a city-wide park
clean up.
