SUBJECT: Donations From the Heart Program - Resolution No. 6896
DATE: April 7, 2009
Introduction
The City Council is asked to adopt the Donations From the Heart Program
recommended by the PRAB.
Backaround
The PRAB began discussing developing a memorial donation program in September
2008. After reviewing the proposed Donations From the Heart Program numerous times
the PRAB moved to recommend the program to City Council at the March 23, 2009
meeting.
Discussion
The Donations From the Heart Program is a program offering the Citizens of the City of
Shakopee an opportunity to donate a bench or a tree to the City in honor of a loved one.
The program establishes the financial donation accepted to place a bench or a tree on
City property. The donation of a bench will include an attached engraved plaque stating
the donation. The bench will be selected by the City to maintain consistency of the site
furnishings.
The tree donation will be a 2" to 3" balled and burlapped tree from the City's
recommended tree list. A tree planting permit will be required for staff review and
approval. Citizens are given the opportunity to donate a tree at a reduced rate if the
donated tree is purchased and planted in the spring or fall in conjunction with the City
tree plantings. The donator will have the option of purchasing a plaque to accompany
the tree. The plaques will be placed near the tree or at a designated location within the
park.
The attached brochure will be available to the public and includes the application
required.
