Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Jamie Polley, Director of Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources
Meeting Date: March 17, 2009
Subject: Lions Club Request to Utilize Lions Park Land Sale Proceeds at
the Shakopee Ice Arena
INTRODUCTION
The Lions Club is interested in reallocating funds that have been set aside for the Lion's
Park second outdoor ice rink to the Shakopee Ice Arena.
BACKGROUND
In May of 2003 the City Council moved to split the excess funds from the land sale
adjacent to Lions Park between the Park Reserve Fund for Lions Park and the other
50% would go towards the City's assessments on Vierling Dr. The amount deposited in
to the Park Reserve Fund for Lions Park was $41,000. The Lions Club had allocated a
small portion of these funds to improvements in Lions Park. In 2007 they allocated
$5,000 towards the renovation of the Lions Park bathrooms and $6,000 to an outdoor
second sheet of ice within the park. In addition, on November 3, 2008 the City Council
approved $4,500 of the Lion's Park land sale proceeds to fund the installation of
irrigation on the infields of a few of the softball diamonds in Tahpah Park as requested
by the Lion's Club.
The construction of a second outdoor sheet of ice at Lions Park has been postponed
due to efforts to construct a second indoor sheet of ice which is of greater need to
provide more activities to our citizens. Since this project has been postponed the Lion's
Club is requesting that the $6,000 be reallocated to improvement to the Shakopee Ice
Arena. Improvements would include installing 2-3 monitors that would inform the
community of upcoming events, replacement of the speaker system, and a
commemorative display case of the old bubble rink.
CITY GOALS

REQUESTED ACTION
The City Council, if concurs, motion to approve the funding of $6,000, currently set aside
for the second outdoor ice sheet, for the improvements to the Shakopee Ice Arena. The
$6,000 to be utilized from the remaining $31,500 Lions Park land sale proceeds currently
held in the Park Reserve Fund.
