CITY OF SHAKO PEE
Memorandum CONSEt~T
TO: Mayor & City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Bruce Loney, Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Hiring of Engineering Intern
DATE: March 17, 2009
INTRODUCTION;
The City Council is asked to authorize the advertising and hiring of an Engineering
Intern.
BACKGROUND:
In 2009, the Graduate Engineer resigned from the City of Shakopee to pursue a job with
the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Staff is looking at not filling this position
due to the workload reduction in the development area and other areas. Staff does see a
need to obtain additional Engineering assistance that an Engineering Intern could provide
in the areas of project inspection, traffic counting, as-built filing and GIS work tasks.
It is anticipated that an Engineering Intern could be utilized for approximately 12 weeks
and between 30 to 40 hours per week. The Graduate Engineer's wages and benefits,
minus the one week that he was here in 2009, is approximately $76,000.00. An
Engineering Intern would cost the City in wages approximately $6,000.00 to $7,000.00
for 2009.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve a motion authorizing the advertising and hiring of an Engineering Intern
for 2009.
2. Do not authorize the advertising and hiring of an Engineering Intern.
3. Table for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff would recommend Alternative No.1, due to the amount of work and assistance
needed for 2009.
ACTION REOUESTED:
Approve a motion authorizing the advertising and hiring of an Engineering Intern for
2009.
