INTRODUCTION: Public Works is requesting council to authorize staff to enter into a sub-grant agreement with the Metropolitan Emergency Services Board for the purchase of Eight Portable 800 MHz Radios for Emergency Management and accept the grant amount of $8,990.89. BACKGROUND: The wind storm in May 1998 made staff aware that the biggest problem in Emergency Management was the inability to communicate with police, fire, and utility personnel. Staff has been working with Captain Craig Robson on the acquisition of portable 800 MHz radios for use by public works personnel to assist in emergency situations where maintenance staff is required to respond. Staffhas applied for, and has been informed, that we will receive an allocation of grant funds of $8,990.89. The grant is from the Metropolitan Emergency Services Board for the acquisition of eight portable 800 MHz radios. This is an 80%/20% grant with the remainder of the funding for the purchase to come out of the streets, parks, sanitary sewer and surface water budgets. The total cost ofthese radios is $12,174.64. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Authorize staff to enter into a sub-grant agreement with the Metropolitan Emergency Services Board and accept the grant allocation of $8,990.89 for the purchase of eight 800 MHz portable radios. 2. Deny the request. 3. Table for additional information. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends alternative number one. ACTION REOUESTED: Motion to direct staff to enter into a sub-grant agreement with the Metropolitan Emergency Services Board and accept the grant allocation of $8,990.89 for the purchase of eight 800 MHz portable radios. 4'~ Michael Hu lander Public Works Superintendent
