TO: Mayor & City C~uncil ' IJII' .J""'" .(1" , '~f\i Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Carrie Duckett, Information Technology Coordinator SUBJECT: Authorization to Purchase TimeScale CDP DATE: February 10,2009 Introduction The City Council is asked to authorize the purchase of TimeScale CDP as part of the disaster recovery solution for the City's IT network. Background In 2008, the City purchased a second Storage Area Network (SAN) to be housed at City Hall. Our production SAN is located in our data center at the Police Station. To replicate data to the second SAN, I am recommending that we purchase TimeScale CDP (Continuous Data Protection). In order for us to be fully functional, two TimeScale CDP appliances will ultimately be needed to replicate data between our data center and City Hall. With funds budgeted for 2009, we can afford to purchase one this year. TimeScale CDP is a continuous data protection and recovery system, which is designed to reliably and quickly recover the City's applications and data following unforeseen events. It provides an easy-to-use solution for local and off-site data protection and recovery. It also enables us to proactive1y protect our data from human error, software attacks, infrastructure failures, and disasters that would otherwise keep the City from continuing business. Budget Impact The cost to purchase a single TimeScale appliance (including shipping and tax) is $43,473.30. These funds will be taken from the adopted 2009 IT budget. The cost to purchase the second appliance in a future year is estimated at $20,480. Requested Action If it concurs, the Council is asked to offer a motion authorizing appropriate City staff to purchase the first half of TimeScale CDP (Continuous Data Protection) in an amount not to exceed $43,480.
