13. F. 2J.
CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUB1ECT: Derby Days Board of Directors Representation
DATE: January 28, 2009
Comment:
Introduction:
The City Council is asked to consider City representation on the Derby Days Board of
Directors.
Background:
The Derby Days committee is reorganizing this year, and will be establishing a Board of
Directors, with up to ten members. The desire is to have broader community
representation.
At the initial meetings, the City has been represented by Recreation Supervisor Brad
Eller.
Derby Days has inquired as to whether Brad would be available to serve on the Board of
Directors. In addition, they have asked for a City Council Liaison to the Derby Days
organization.
Discussion:
We are fortunate to have Mr. Eller's willingness to serve; however, I believe his capacity
should be that of an ex-officio status, where he could participate in discussion, but not
vote. In my view, Derby Days should be a community event, rather than one with a City
staff with a vote on the decisions being made.
Regarding the Council liaison question, last year Councilor Joos served unofficially in
that capacity. The Council is asked to determine whether it wishes to officially appoint
someone to that position for 2009.
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal A, "Active and Healthy Community"; and Goal C, "Great Place for
Kids to Grow Up".
Recommendation:
I recommend that Brad Eller be designated as the ex-officio City representative to the
Derby Day's Board of Directors, and that Council designate a liaison to the Derby Days
organization.
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize Brad Eller's to be City's ex-officio
representative to the Derby Days organization, and that it designate a City Council
liaison.
