No. 6868 s: F,y' CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Resolution of Support-34th Red Bull Infantry DivisionlNational Guard DATE: January 13,2009 Comment: Introduction: The City Council is asked to adopt a resolution of support for the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division of the Minnesota National Guard. Background: The Washington County Board of Commissioners has asked that as many cities and counties in Minnesota as possible adopt a resolution of support for the Stillwater-based Military Police Company of the Minnesota National Guard. The 34th Red Bull Infantry Division is being deployed to Iraq. It will leave on training February 13th, and arrive in Iraq in April. The attached resolution is proposed for Council adoption. Relationship to Visioning: This supports Goal D, "Vibrant, Resilient, and Stable". Recommendation: I recommend that the Council supports the concept to adopt the attached resolution. Action Required: If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, adopt the following Resolution No. 6867: A Resolution in Support of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division, 34th Military Police Company of the Minnesota National Guard on its Deployment to Iraq. ll~~ Mark McNeill City Administrator RESOLUTION NO. 6867 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE 34th RED BULL INFANTRY DIVISION, 34th MILITARY POLICE COMPANY OF THE MINNESOTA NATIONAL GUARD ON ITS DEPLOYMENT TO IRAQ WHEREAS, the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division will begin a one-year deployment to Iraq beginning on February 13, 2009 with training exercises in the United States and then arrival in Iraq in April 2009; and WHEREAS, four Minnesota Units including nearly 1,000 service members from throughout Minnesota, of which approximately one-third have had prior service in Iraq, will be included in the deployment to the southern portion of Iraq to command military operations in the area; and WHEREAS, the 34th Military Police Company with 166 members will be one of the four units to be deployed; and WHEREAS, this is an unprecedented military mission with the 34th Infantry Division leading a force of more than 16,000 service personnel who will be enabling the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their future affairs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, acknowledges with grateful appreciation the sacrifices of the military personnel who are leaving home and loved ones to serve our nation in Iraq; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, commends the men and women of the 34th Military Police Company and all units of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division for their dedication to the success of its mission and the City Council expresses its concern for the safety and well-being of all the service personnel and the sacrifices of their families during this deployment.
