CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum CONSENT
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Ice Facilities Study Committee
DATE: December 11, 2008
Comment:
Introduction:
The Council is asked to appoint two of its members to serve on an ad hoc Ice Facilities
study committee, who would serve along with members of the Shakopee School Board
and The Hockey Association.
Background:
As part of the consideration ofthe Facilities Joint Use Agreement, members ofthe
School Board expressed concern about facilities at the Shakopee Ice Arena as well as the
rates charged for rental of ice time. There was also discussion of the City's use of the
school district's pool facilities.
Council liaison Pat Heitzman suggested that a small committee be formed to look at the
issues. He suggested two members of the School Board, two members of the Hockey
Association and two City Council representatives. They would be joined by School
Superintendent John McBroom and the City Administrator. It is probable that the
committee will also look at other aspects ofthe Facilities Use Agreement, such as the
swimming pools.
Councilor Heitzman has volunteered to serve, as well as Councilor Steve Clay. If another
member of the Council has a desire to serve, a decision as to whom will need to be made.
Recommendation:
Unless there is other interest on the part of the members of the City Council, the Council
should affirm these two individuals as the City representatives for the Study Committee.
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal A, "Active and Healthy Community".
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should by motion, appoint Councilors Pat Heitzman and Steve
Clay to be the City Council representatives on the ad hoc Ice Facilities study committee.
