TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City AdministratoDftP
SUBJECT: Leave of Absence for Firefighter Veronica Giese
DATE: December 10, 2008
Introduction
The City Council is asked to authorize a second 90-day leave of absence for paid-on-call
firefighter Veronica Giese.
Background
Veronica Giese has been:a paid-on-call firefighter for the City since August of2004. Earlier this
fall she was hired by the City of Woodbury to work as a police officer I paramedic. At that time
she requested a 90-day leave of absence from the Fire Department and Chief Coleman approved
the leave, which runs through December 31,2008. She has now requested an extension ofthat
leave for an additional 90 days due to the field training and continuing education requirements of
her new position with the City of Woodbury. The City's Personnel Handbook for Paid-on-Call
Firefighters authorizes the Fire Chief to approve leaves of absence up to 90 days, but requires
City Council approval for leaves beyond 90 days.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that Council authorize a second 90-day leave of absence for paid-on-call
firefighter Veronica Giese, effective January 1 - March 31, 2009.
Requested Action
If Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize an unpaid leave of absence for paid-on-
call firefighter Veronica Giese, effective January 1 - March 31, 2009.
