3. LL.
CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
CASELOG NO: NA
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Historic Preservation Advisory Commission
Mark Noble, Planner II ~
SUBJECT: Historic Plaques
MEETING DATE: November 25, 2008
INTRODUCTION:
The Historic Preservation Advisory Commission would like to discuss with the Council the plaques proposed for
the Locally Designated Historic Properties.
DISCUSSION:
The Commission and staff have discussed providing plaques to those property owners who have had their property
listed as one of the Locally Designated Historic Properties (of which there are presently 55). The Commission has
been awarded a grant from the Minnesota Sesquicentennial (Council approved the acceptance of this grant award
on August 6, 2008) that they intend to utilize to pay for these plaques, which then would be offered to the property
owners at no cost. Whether those home owners install the plaques on a post in the yard, or directly on the structure
itself would be at the discretion of the property owner.
The Commission and staff have sought out bids on the proposed plaques, and have recommended working with SS
Design on the production ofthe plaques. The six (6) inch by eight (8) inch plaques would incorporate the Shakopee
Sesquicentennial logo, the text "Shakopee" and "Historic Site", and the number as it correlates with the designated
number found in the "Walking Tour of Historic Shakopee" document (see attached graphic of proposed plaque).
The cost for each of the plaques would be $5.45, or $545.00 for 100 plaques.
ACTION REQUESTED:
The Commission is requesting consent of the City Council to proceed with the purchase of the proposed plaques,
with the cost to come out of the grant money awarded to the Commission.
