Purchase of 2002 Ford Explorer CITY OF SHAKOPEE ,~ (S, ') MEMORANDUM v"- , TO: Mayor & City Council ~t>R ,~~C r~p Mark McNeill, City Administrator Bruce Loney, Public Works Director COt~sErJT FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Superintendent DATE: September 16, 2008 SUBJECT: Purchase of2002 Ford Explorer INTRODUCTION: The Fleet Division of the Public Works Department is recommending purchasing a 2002 Ford Explorer through the Police Department that was confiscated by D.U.I. The purchase price is $6,100.00. This will replace the 1987 Chevy Suburban used by the Natural Resources Specialist. BACKGROUND: The Police Department confiscates a number of vehicles every year through law enforcement activities of the Drug Task Force and D.U.I. prosecutions. These vehicles are retained for enforcement activities or sold on auction. The Fleet Division inquired about retaining the 2002 Ford Explorer, which is in excellent condition, for use in other City departments and was informed that regulations require these vehicles to be sold on auction if they are not to be used for police activities. The City can purchase these vehicles for other departments through the Police Department with the funds to go to either the Drug Task Force Fund or D.U.I. Fund depending on the type of prosecution in which the vehicle was confiscated. Staff is asking to purchase a 2002 Ford Explorer for the purchase price of $6,100.00 for the Natural Resources Specialist. Kelley Blue Book has this vehicle valued at $8,700.00. Staff believes this would be an excellent purchase for the City to replace the oldest vehicle in the fleet, the 1987 Chevy Suburban; this vehicle will be sold on auction. The funding will come from the Equipment Fund so there will be no General Fund impact with this purchase other than a slight increase in the rental rate for the vehicle. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Purchase a 2002 Ford Explorer through the Police Department for $6,100.00 with the Funds to be expended from the Internal Service Equipment Fund. 2. Deny the request. 3. Table for additional information. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends alternative number one. ACTION REOUESTED: Motion to direct staff to purchase a 2002 Ford Explorer through the Police Department for $6,100.00 with the funds to be expended from the Internal Service Equipment Fund and declare the 1987 Chevy Suburban as surplus equipment. and authorize disposal of same at auction. ~~ Michael Hu lander Public Works Superintendent
