Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Residential Parking Request-Derby Days
DATE: July 1, 2008
Comment:
Introduction:
The Council is asked to authorize residential parking only restrictions to be placed on
portions of Bluff Street, and certain side streets north of 1st Avenue, for Derby Days.
The dates of Derby Days will be July 31-August 3,2008.
Background:
Derby Days Co-Chair Jack McGovern has approached City staff, asking that the City
Council authorize parking to be restricted to residential parking only on Bluff Avenue,
Main Street north of 1st Avenue, and certain other side streets. Note that Bluff Avenue
between Main Street and Prairie Street (two blocks) is already restricted to residential
parking only, because of that area's proximity to a local bar.
Details are still being worked out, and will be presented at the July 1 st meeting. The intent
would be for the City to sign the restricted areas, and the Jaycees to personally notify the
affected properties. A permit or other identification sign would be distributed to residents
for use in their vehicles. The Shakopee Police Department would have to monitor, and
could order non-resident vehicles to be ticketed or towed.
Mr. McGovern will have more details concerning the request tonight.
Note that there was June 17th City Council discussion about a similar action--to restrict
parking on Bluffto vendor parking only on Thursday, July 31, as part ofthe Taste of
Shakopee. This would be a separate action from that; vendor parking was allowed during
the Taste (2pm-8pm) by a 3-2 vote. Therefore, no reconsideration vote is needed.
Action Required:
If the Council wants to restrict parking as requested, a motion directing such should be
made.
