CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Shakopee City Council
FROM: John Schmitt, Mayor
SUBJECT: 2004 Liaison Appointments
DATE: January 5, 2004
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to endorse the following Council Liaison appointments for 2004.
BACKGROUND:
In order to maintain effective communications individual members of the City Council
are typically appointed as liaison to the various groups with whom the City deals.
I would like to appoint the following people as liaisons or Council officer for 2004:
1. Acting Mayor - Joe Helkamp
2. Shakopee Public Utilities Commission Liaison - Terry Joos
3. LS.D. 720 School Board - Steve Menden
4. Scott County Board of Commissioners - Joe Helkamp
5. Shakopee Convention and Visitors Bureau - Joe Helkamp
6. Shakopee Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors - Joe Helkamp
7. Association of Metropolitan Municipalities - John Schmitt and Mark McNeill
(Alternate).
8. Suburban Rate Authority - Mark McNeill and Paul Snook (Alternate)
9. Vision Shakopee - Steve Menden
10. Interview Committee - Steve Menden and Joe Helkamp
11. Park and Rec Advisory Board - Matt Lehman
12. Metropolitan Council- John Schmitt and Michael Leek (Alternate)
13. Environmental Advisory Board - Steve Menden
I have asked Councilor Menden to serve as the liaison to the EAC. The City Council
doesn't have liaisons to the Planning Commission, EDAC, or the Telecommunications
Commission. Given the level of involvement that the Planning Commission would
require, I will encourage all members of the City Council to attend Planning Commission
meetings on an occasional basis, so that they may become familiar with the workings of
the Planning Commission.
In addition, there are some "ad hoc" committees that will require representation. I have
asked Councilors Joos and Lehman to continue to serve on the Railroad Safety
Committee for this year, and also Councilor Lehman to continue to serve on the policy
advisory subcommittee of the 169 Corridor Committee. Community Development
Director Michael Leek and Public Works Director Bruce Loney will serve as the City's
representatives to the US 169 Corridor Committee's technical advisory subcommittee.
RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend the above be appointed to the various offices/liaison posts for 2004.
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs with the appointments, they should,.by motion, affirm the
appointments.
