CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Police Department
Memorandum
To: Honorable Mayor, City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Jeff Tate, Captain
Subject: Surplus Property
Date: May 28, 2008
INTRODUCTION
The Shakopee Police Department is seeking council approval to declare one rifle surplus
property with proceeds from the sale going to the drug forfeiture fund where it would be
used towards the purchase of a new sharp shooting rifle.
BACKGROUND
The Shakopee Police Department has used a Ruger M77 .308 caliber rifle (serial # 773-
16344) for sharp shooting purposes. This rifle and scope had been dedicated solely to the
emergency response team. The Tri-City Emergency Response Team is seeking to
upgrade their sharp shooting equipment; specifically, the rifle and scope used by
Shakopee members. To do that, the department would like to sell our current rifle and
scope and use the proceeds towards a Remington Tactical Rifle and sniper package.
The police department has taken three bids for the rifle, with the largest bid coming from
the Sport Stop in Shakopee. The police department is seeking council authorization to sell
the Ruger rifle to the Sport Stop for $600.00, with the proceeds being placed into the
police department's drug forfeiture account. The new sharp shooting rifle will be
purchased using drug forfeiture funds.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP
This action supports:
Goal E: Financially Strong

the department's drug forfeiture account.
ALTERNATIVES

16344) and scope as surplus property to be sold to the Sport Stop for $600.00,
which would be used towards the purchase of a new rifle.
2. Do not authorize.
RECOMMENDATION

ACTION REQUESTED
If Council concurs, they should by motion declare the Ruger M77 rifle and scope as
surplus property to be sold to the Sport Stop for $600.00, with proceeds going towards
the purchase of a new sharp shooting rifle.
