CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: AI Geis, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: Authorize Bids for the Replacement of a 1986 Mack Tanker Truck
DATE: May 14, 2008
INTRODUCTION:
The Shakopee Fire Department has begun the process of forming specifications for a
replacement truck for the Mack Tanker truck that is 22 years old and not meeting standards of
today's fire apparatus for tanker trucks. The fire department has allowed the truck to be
pushed out 2 years past the 20 year replacement but have decided any further delay in
replacement could result in costly repairs to keep the truck in service. The tanker committee
has also decided to spec apumper/tanker which will be more feasible for the city and allow
versatility of the tanker. This change will allow the truck to be utilized for more calls than the
couple calls a month the tanker provides service to now.
BACKGROUND:
The Shakopee Fire Department purchased the truck in 1986 to help with the fire protection in
the townships. This tanker truck allows residents in the townships to have fuN water coverage
by the fire department that serves them to help with insurance costs. The tanker truck serves
portions of the City of Shakopee, Jackson and Louisville Townships and the replacement is
crucial in promoting fire protection for non city hydrated areas of the city and townships.
The 5-year equipment list for 2008 includes $450,000 for a tanker. If any council member
desires to review the specifications, acopy is on file with the City Clerk.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP:
This purchase of a replacement apparatus for the 1986 Mack tanker represents A & B of the
vision set by the City of Shakopee, this being Active and Healthy Community, and High Quality
of Life.
ALTERNATIVES:
Alternative 1: Do not allow going to bids for the pumper/tanker and keeping the 1986 Mack
truck which is not meeting standards of today's apparatus.
Alternative 2: Allow for bids to go out for a replacement pumper/tanker for the Shakopee Fire
Department.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is the recommendation of the Fire Chief to go with option 2 and allow bids to go out on the
specifications of apumper/tanker for the City of Shakopee Fire Department.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If council concurs, move to authorize the advertising for bids for apumper/tanker.
