SUBJECT: Addition of Option B to Community Open Houses (A, B)
Action Sought
The City Council is asked to approve the recommendation of the Park & Rec
Advisory Board (PRAB) to add Option B to the Community Center improvement
options presented at the community open houses.
Background
On May 6, the City Council set the dates for three open houses to obtain the
community's comments on four Community Center improvement options. The open
houses will be:
Thursday, May 28th, 7-9PM at the Community Center Rotary Room
Monday, June 1st, 7-9PM at Sun Path Elementary Cafeteria
Wednesday, June 3rd, 7-9PM at Eagle Creek Elementary Cafeteria
The City Council was presented with five Community Center Improvement options:
Option A:
•New two sheet ice arena on land that does not have to be purchased
•Remodeled Community Center including expanded fitness, indoor playground
and child care
•Aquatic facility in the existing ice arena shell
Option B:
•New two sheet ice arena on land that does not have to be purchased
•Remodel of Community Center including expanded fitness, indoor playground
and child care
•Athletic space in the existing ice arena shell (no aquatic facility)
Option C:
•New two sheet ice arena on land that does not have to be purchased
•Remodel of Community Center including expanded fitness, indoor playground
and child care
•Do nothing with the existing ice arena shell at this time
Option D:
•New two sheet ice arena on land that does not have to be purchased
•Operate the Community Center as it is today
•Do nothing with the existing ice arena shell at this time
Option E:
•Update the current ice arena refrigeration system only
•Operate the Community Center and ice arena as they are today
With the successful passing of the School District's referendum, which in addition
to the expanded education facilities also includes both indoor and outdoor athletic
facility improvements, Council direct staff not to include Option B in the open
house materials.
Discussion
At the May 11, PRAB meeting, staff provided the PRAB with the dates for the
community open houses and asked that they attend as many of the open houses as
they can. In addition staff reviewed with the PRAB the options that were discussed
and chosen. After much discussion, the PRAB felt strongly that Option B should
also be presented to the community for comment at the open houses. They felt the
need for indoor athletic space is significant enough that the additions to the school
facilities will not be enough. They felt that this option would not duplicate the
efforts of the school district and could be an alternative option to the pool. The
PRAB feels that the space would be well utilized and a more cost effective option
then leaving the space dark.
The PRAB made a motion recommending to the City Council that Option B also be
presented at the community open houses.
Relationship to Vision
A. Keep Shakopee a safe and healthy community where residents can pursue active
and quality lifestyles.
B. Positively manage the challenges and opportunities presented by growth
development and change.
Requested Action
If the Council concurs with the PRAB's recommendation, it is asked to direct staff
to also present Option B to the community for comment at the open houses
scheduled for May 28th, June 1st and June 3rd.
