Action Sought
Offer a motion to proclaim May as "Bike Month" and Friday, May 15th as "Bike to
Work Day" in Shakopee.
Background:
The City of Shakopee has made a commitment to improving bicycling opportunities
for residents and visitors and the month of May is National Bike Month and May
15th is National Bike to Work Day. The attached proclamation is offered for the
Mayor and City Council's signatures to raise awareness of bicycling as a viable and
economical mode of transportation, recreation, and fitness for residents and
visitors of all ages.
OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION
A PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY"BIKE MONTH"AND
MAY 15 "BIKE TO WORK DAY" IN THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Whereas,bicycling is a popular form of recreation for many Shakopee residents and a viable,
environmentally friendly means of transportation; and
Whereas,the Minnesota Valley State Trail,which runs along the northern edge of the City, attracts
metro-area bicyclists and provides economic, health, and scenic benefits to Shakopee citizens; and
Whereas,the City has made a commitment to improve bicycling infrastructure and safety by
establishing the Bicycle Advisory Committee, by working collaboratively with Scott County to
design cyclist and pedestrian-friendly roads and trails and provide future connections to the
Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail,area parks,and attractions; and
Whereas, bicycling cannot only positively impact Shakopee's economy and tourism industry, but
also stimulate economic development by making Shakopee attractive to businesses and citizens who
enjoy the outdoors and healthy lifestyles; and
Whereas, bicycling education is important for cyclists and motorists to ensure the safety and
comfort of all users; and
Whereas, creating bicycle-friendly communities has been shown to improve citizens' health,well-
being, and quality of life; boost community spirit; improve traffic safety; and reduce pollution and
congestion; and
Whereas,May is annually declared National Bike Month as area organizations, including the
League of American Bicyclists,the Shakopee Bicycle Advisory Committee,the Great Scott Cycling
Club,Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota,Bike Walk Twin Cities, Twin Cities Bicycling Club,People
For Bikes, schools, Saint Francis Regional Medical Center, businesses and civic groups,plan to
promote bicycling as a leisure activity and environmentally friendly alternative to the automobile;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the City Council of the City of
Shakopee hereby recognize the month of May 2015 as National Bike Month and Friday,May 15 as
Bike to Work Day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Shakopee urges all who
support bicycling to participate in planned events while encouraging all road users to share the road
safely with bicyclists.
Passed in regular session of the City Council of the City of Shakopee, Minnesota held this
day of May, 2015.
