Action Sought
Council is asked to consider Resolution Number 7537, a Resolution of the City of
Shakopee Approving the Violent Crime Enforcement Team (VCET) Grant Award,
in the amount of$90,000 with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office
of Justice Programs, in which Shakopee serves as the financial agent to administer
grant funds that partially fund the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force. The
Agreement will also require signature of the City officials. This agreement remains
the same from the prior year agreement, except for the change in date.
Background
For many years the state and federal governments have encouraged local law
enforcement agencies to form regional drug task forces to investigate drug law
violations. Federal and state money is distributed to these task forces to support
their operation.
The Shakopee Police Department has been a member of the Southwest Metro Drug
Task Force since its inception in 1988 and wishes to continue participating in the
Task Force.
The City currently serves as the financial agent of the Task Force and has served in
that capacity for several years.
The Southwest Metro Drug Task Force was successful in securing grant funds from
the federal government to partially fund its operating expenses in 2015. The
Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs, acts as the
grant administrator for the federal government. As the financial agent, the City is
required to approve the proposed grant award in the amount of$90,000. This grant
agreement is the same as was given to the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force last
year, which council approved.
