SUBJECT: Authorize Closure of Second Avenue from Atwood to Holmes and the Crossings for
Atwood, Fuller and Holmes Streets(ADDED 10/7/14)
Introduction
The Council is asked to authorize the closure of Second Avenue from Atwood to Homes Street
from Saturday, October 18th at 7:00 a.m. through Monday, October 20th at 5:00 p.m. This would
also involve the closure the closure of the crossings for Atwood, Fuller, and Holmes, and also
second Avenue in both directions during those same dates. Signs would go out Friday in
preparation for the road closures.
The reason for the closure is to remove the crossings and some trackage, and then remove and
replace the gravel base, and install a drain tile. Without this work, electrical shorts will continue,
which have caused crossing signals at both Holmes and Fuller to be deactivated. This is
necessitated the Union Pacific Rail crews having to stop the train and proceed to manually
to warn vehicle traffic at the crossings. This has caused delays, and long train horns being
sounded as warnings.
If weather does not cooperate, the work will be delayed to a subsequent weekend/Monday.
Budget Impact
There is no cost to the City.
Requested Action
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize the closure of Second Avenue from
Atwood to Holmes Street, and the vehicle crossings for Atwood, Fuller and Holmes Streets from
October 18-21.
