Authorization to Hire Public Works Maintenance Operator 7- e.s-: CITY OFSHAKOPEE CONSENT MEMORANDUM To: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator From: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator ~ ~j "Bale:'" A:ugust'36:-2006 Subject: Authorization to Hire for Maintenance Operator INTRODUCTION The City Council is asked to authorize hiring Matthew Hjermstad for the position of Maintenance Operator with the Public Works Department. BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION Following the resignation of Gary Snyder from his position as a Maintenance Operator with the Public Works Department, the City Council authorized staff to begin the process of filling the position. After posting the position, the City received 41 applications. Six candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of Bruce Loney, Mike Hullander, Dave Rutt and myself. Based on those interviews and conversations with the candidate's references, the interview panel is recommending that Matthew Hjermstad be hired to fill the position. Mr. Hjermstad has post-secondary training in heavy equipment operation and currently works as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Klingelhutz Construction. He will be working primarily in the Street Division of the Public Works Department. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council authorize hiring Matthew Hjermstad for the position of Maintenance Operator, with a starting salary of $17.219 per hour, which is Step 1 of the union contract. This action is contingent on successful pre-employment screening. REOUESTED ACTION If Council concurs, it should move to authorize hiring Matthew Hjermstad for the position of Maintenance Operator, at Step 1 of the union contract ($17.219 per hour), contingent on the successful completion of the City's required pre-employment screenmgs.
