Derby Days Street/Parking Lot Closings CITY OF SHAKOPEE s-: F.b · Memorandum CONSENT 'TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Derby Days Street/Parking Lot Closings DATE: June 27, 2006 INTRODUCTION: The Council is asked to approve a request from the Derby Days Committee regarding street and parking lot closures. BACKGROUND: Derby Days will be held this year from Thursday, Aug. 3rd - Sunday, August 6th. Events similar to those in previous years, including the Taste of Shakopee on Thursday, beer tent and dance on Friday will be held. A Classic Car Show will require 1st A venue to be closed from Holmes to Sommerville Streets, from 8:30 AM- 12:00 PM on Saturday, August 5th. As was the case in recent years, the Sunday parade route will be on 10th A venue, and will be staged in the Town Square Mall parking lot. A kiddie parade will be held on 3rd A venue from Scott to Lewis on Saturday. Derby Days Co-Chairs, Sandy Doherty and Jack McGovern have submitted information showing the requested street closures, parking lot closures, and other restrictions beginning Wednesday, August 2nd. The Derby Days Committee has advised, or will advise the major users of the parking lots of the times for closure. The Derby Days Committee has. also required the assistance of City workers to perform various duties throughout Derby Days, as detailed in the attached memo. Mr. McGovern will be in attendance at theJuly 5th meeting if there are questions. RECOMMENDATION: We recommend that the following traffic.and parking related lot or street closures be approved, subject to any modifications recommended by the Police Department: Wednesday August 2 after 5:00 p.m. until Sunday August 6 at 12:00 p.m.: . Parking lot on 2nd A venue between Sommerville and Lewis Street- Northeastern Corner- to set up tent Thursday August 3 after 1:00 p.m. until Sunday August 6 at 12:00 p.m.: . Parking lot on 2nd between Lewis and Holmes- Southwestern Corner- to set up Family Fun Park (There will be an entrance on Holmes for the Apartments on 2nd Avenue to enter) . . This VOLUNTEER committee has been hard at work trying to plan and run a safe and fun community festival. On Thursday night for the Taste of Shakopee we predict that close to 4,000 people will be downtown sampling the local food. With the Business Expo taking off, there should be close to 75+ area business showing off their wares. Wow! Are you ready?
