L\ I CITY OF SHAKOPEE MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor & City Council CONSENT Mark McNeill, City Administrator Bruce Loney, Public Works Director FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Supervisor DATE: June 20, 2006 SUBJECT: Purchase of Wanner Weed Sprayer for the Parks Division. INTRODUCTION: Staff budgeted $4,500 for a weed sprayer in the 2006 Park supply budget. The total purchase for the sprayer is $7,636.05. Due to the increase, staff needs Council authorization for the purchase since it is now considered a Capital Equipment Item. BACKGROUND: Staff requested to purchase an additional weed sprayer for the parks department due to the increase in park acreage. The original estimate wexeceived was under $5,000 and thereforeit was placed in the Park supply budget as per policy. In the spring of2006 staff purchased the sprayer. Staff added two options. The first was. an electric boom lift kit which makes operations more efficient because the operator does not have to get in and out of the tractor when in tight spaces. This option cost $1,400. The second option was an electric hose reel. This option cost $925. Adding the two options made the total purchase price greater than $5,000. Equipment costing more than $5,000 with a life expectancy of more than one year is considered Capital Equipment. Staff had not budgeted it as Capital Equipment because the quote we received at budget time was only $4,500. As per City policy, Capital Equipment Items that were not included in the budget need Council approval. We are requesting that Council approve the purchase of the sprayer. Sufficient funds in operating supplies exist to pay for the additional cost including $3,000 miscellaneous. ACTION REQUESTED: Approve the purchase of the Wanner Weed Sprayer for the Parks Division at a price of $7.636.05 Michael Hullander Public Works Supervisor
