SHAKOPEE TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Craig Robson, Captain DATE: 07/15/2014 SUBJECT: 2014 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Application(F) Action Sought If Council concurs, they should make a motion to allow staff to complete the 2014 Edward Byrne Memorial JAG grant application. Background On April 24, 2014 the Shakopee Police Department was notified by the Department of Justice that it was eligible to apply for grant funding in the amount of$10,912. The grant award is based on the local crime rate. Shakopee is one of many communities throughout the state eligible for this funding. The grant application was submitted in early June and is in a pending status. The funding provided by this grant will be used to improve the department's capabilities to process fingerprint evidence and improve the working conditions of our property room custodian by ridding the work area of noxious fumes and odors. Under the terms of the grant, public notification of the grant application has been posted on the city's website and Council is asked to authorize the application. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant(JAG)will allow the Department to improve its capabilities to recover, process and store evidence and property. Grant funding will be used to expand the Department's ability to process fingerprint evidence and improve the Evidence Room's working conditions by ridding the work area or noxious fumes and odors. The JAG is provided to local governments to support a range of program areas including law enforcement, prosecution and courts, crime prevention and education, corrections and community corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, planning, evaluation, technology improvement, and crime victim and witness initiatives.
