Fitness Equipment Purchase
INTRODUCTION
City Council is asked to authorize the purchase of new fitness equipment, trade in of a
leg extension/leg curl machine and the donation of one decline bench to the Shakopee
Police Department.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
In March 2004 City Council approved the reuse of the gymnastics space within the
Community Center for fitness activities. The reuse provided a permanent home for our
aerobics program, designated cardio and weights area for our members, and better
utilized an underutilized space.
From 2004 - 2007 we have reconfigured the fitness area, added new equipment and
accommodated ADA guidelines. With the improvements we made the last 4 years, we
have provided an improved fitness space in the facility we currently have.
Currently we have a leg extension/leg curl machine that is one of the original pieces of
strength equipment. This piece takes up a large amount of space and is nearing the end
of its life expectancy. We are proposing to trade in this piece of equipment and replace
it with a newer/more compact model.
The 2008 operating budget contains $20,000 for upgrading fitness equipment. We
currently have a good selection of equipment for the size of our fitness center and the
area is close to its maximum capacity for the amount of equipment that can be housed in
the area in accordance with ADA guidelines. Therefore, I am recommending a scenario
that would upgrade some of the equipment, would involve donation of one piece of older
equipment to the Police Department and would incorporate a few pieces we are lacking.
The existing inventory of equipment we have is as follows:

Proposed Eauipment
We sent out a request for quotes to 4 different companies and received 3 quotes. As
you can see TechnoGym offered a number of quoted items, but did not have everything
we needed and much of their equipment was not multifunction like Push Pedal Pull.
Many members also requested an additional treadmill but preferred the LifeFitness
Treadmill. The company that carries this piece of equipment is 2nd Wind Exercise. They
only quoted us for the one Treadmill. Free Motion fitness did not provide us with a
quote. We are therefore recommending to move forward with a purchase from Push
Pedal Pull and 2nd Wind Exercise for the purchase of the 2008 equipment.

As part of the purchase, we would also like to donate one decline bench to the
Shakopee Police Department. This piece is in working order but is not desirable for the
use by patrons of the community center.
BUDGET IMPACT
The city has budgeted $20,000 for fitness enhancements in 2008. $13,812.45 will be
used for the purchase of fitness equipment which leaves us with a $6,187.55 balance for
a future purchase in 2008.
We believe that the equipment will allow an enhanced workout and will bring in more
members to the Community Center.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP
The upgrade of fitness equipment will help ensure the long-term viability of the City's
commitment of looking to the future for the good of our community and an investment
that will serve our residents, employees, and guests in the years to come. With this in
mind, this action appears to meet the following aspects of the City's vision:
A Active and healthy community.
B High quality of life.
REQUESTED ACTION
If Council concurs, move to authorize the purchase of new fitness equipment from 2nd
Wind Exercise and Push Pedal Pull in the amount of $13,812.45 including a trade in of
the Cybex leg extension and leg curl machine and the donation of the incline bench to
the Shakopee Police Department.
