SUBJECT:
800 MHZ Radio Purchases
DATE:
November 20, 2007
The City of Shakopee Fire and Police Departments are seeking council approval to
purchase 800 MHZ radios to begin their transition to the new radio system. During the
2006 budget discussion, council authorized $465,000 for the 800 MHZ transition. These
funds have been carried forward into the 2008 budgets of the fire and police department.
Scott County projects going live with the radio system around June of 2008 and has
recommended that departments purchase equipment late in 2007 or possibly the first
quarter of2008. Purchasing radios by November 30, 2007 allows the city to take
advantage of discounts offered by Motorola.
Attached to this memo are the individual requests of the Shakopee Fire Department and
the Shakopee Police Department.

SUBJECT: 800 MHZ Radios
DATE: November 15,2007
INTRODUCTION:
The Shakopee Police Department has put $237,000 in their capital equipment budget for
2007 for the purchase of 800 MHZ radios. The purchase of the 800 MHZ radios is
needed to meet the transition of the Scott County Dispatch from UHF radio system to the
800 MHZ radio system.
BACKGROUND:
The Shakopee Police Department has been meeting with Scott County Dispatch, police
agencies within Scott County and fire departments discussing the options available for
the upcoming change June 2008. The current use of UHF radios is changing to the 800
MHZ system, throughout Scott County. This system will allow us the ability to
communicate more effectively with police departments, fire departments and other
government agencies around the state.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Shakopee Police Department recommends the purchase of 800 MHZ radios at a cost
of $231 ,393 .50. This purchase will save the City of Shakopee $200 - $300 per radio
with the discount from Motorola if purchased by November 30th, 2007. Following the
purchase of the 800 MHZ radios, The Shakopee Police Department would have the
opportunity to start training their personnel in the use of the new 800 MHZ radio system
before the system is live.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Council is requested to allow the Shakopee Police Department to purchase the requested
equipment out ofthe capital equipment fund that was allotted in the 2007 Police
Department budget. The total cost of the equipment will be $231,393.50.
