SUBJECT: City Facilities - December 24th
DATE: November 1,2007
COMMENT
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to authorize City offices and facilities to be closed the morning of
December 24, 2007.
BACKGROUND:
This year, December 24th falls on a Monday. According to the City's personnel policy
and union agreements, City employees normally have ~ day holiday on Christmas Eve
day. Because of the Monday situation, it would mean that staffing would be needed only
in the morning. It is likely that most employees would ask for that time off, so that they
can enjoy a four day holiday weekend. By our experience, there is little business
conducted ~uring such a time.
The Council is asked to consider authorizing the closure of City facilities that would
otherwise be staffed by full time employees - the Community Center could stay open
with part time personnel until its normal closing time of approximately 2:00 pm. The
Police Department would be staffed as it would be normally on a holiday. Otherwise, the
other City facilities (City Hall, Engineering, Public Works, Police Offices) would not
open that Monday morning. City employees would have the option of taking vacation or
unpaid time. Those who wanted to work could do so, but the doors would not be opened
to the public.
RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend that City offices and facilities be authorized to remain closed on the
morning of Monday, December 24,2007.
RELATIONSHIP TO VISIONING:
This supports Goal F. - "Housekeeping"
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize the closing of City offices and
facilities the morning of Monday, December 24, 2007.
