INTRODUCTION:
The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Russell Jenkins as a Custodian.
BACKGROUND:
Due to a recent resignation, there is currently one vacancy in the City's four-person custodial
staff. The vacant position is a third-shift position responsible for cleaning the Community
Center and Youth Building. On August 21, Council authorized staff to advertise the position and
begin the hiring process.
A total of 25 applications were received and 7 candidates were iI)terviewed. Based on the results
of the interviews and reference checks, the interview panel is recommending that Russell Jenkins
be hired to fill the position. Mr. Jenkins has numerous years of relevant experience working for
the Wisconsin State Park system and for Dane County Parks.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP:
Hiring qualified individuals to provide service to Shakopee residents helps support Goal D - a
vibrant, resilient and stable city.
RECOMMENDATION: .
Staff recommends that Russell Jenkins be hired as a Custodian at Step E of Grade 1 ($13.828 per
hour), contingent upon. successful completion of a background / driver's license check and pre-
employment physical/drug test. The anticipated start date for Mr. Jenkins is October 29,2007.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the hiring of Russell Jenkins as a
Custodian, at Step E of Grade 1 of the City's full-time pay plan, contingent upon the successful.
completion of the required pre-employment screenings.
