SUBJECT: Parking Control Signage on 10th Avenue for I.S.D. #720
DATE: September 18, 2007
INTRODUCTION:
This item is for Council authorization for the placement of parking control regulatory
signs. The installation of any regulatory sign for traffic or parking control must be
approved by City Council, per City ordinance.
BACKGROUND:
The placement of regulatory traffic control signs is regulated by ordinance and the City
Council must authorize any changes, as per Chapter 7, Section 7.03 of the City Code.
Attached is a letter from Mike Burlager, Director of Business Services of Independent
School District (LD.S.) #720, requesting an extension of the "No Parking" zone on the
south side of 10th A venue for school buses. This extension would be to the entrance of
the district parking lot.
The school district will paint the curb yellow and additional signage to restrict parking
from 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. on school days only, and will be done by the Public Works
Department.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve a motion to restrict parking on the south side of 10th A venue, from the
parking lot entrance west to the current restriction.
2. Do not approve a motion to extend parking restrictions on 10th Avenue.
3. Table for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends Alternative No.1, to install additional signage on the south side of 10th
A venue to restrict parking for school buses.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Approve a motion to restrict parking on the south side of 10th Avenue, from 7:30 A.M. to
3:30 P.M. on school days, and from the parking lot entrance west to the current
restriction.

Dear Bruce,
Thank you for meeting with me on September 5,2007 tOdisGussextending the
No Parking Zone on 10th Avenue near the Junior High. The area currently
marked doesn't handle the increased number of buses necessary fortheJuniof
High. We would like to extenditfrorn the current spot along 10th Avenue to the
ehtrance of the District parking lot on 10thAvenue.
The District would like to permanently paint the curb and add signage in front of
the Junior Highto restrict parking from7:30 AM tQ3:30 PM onsenool ctays only.
When we changed this building to a Junior High, we need to add more space in
front of the building to allow for the number of buses necessary to transport the
studentsfrol111he building. Extending the No ParkingZone to the Distr'ictparking
lot entrance gives us enough parking to accommodate the buses.
After our discussion and in consultation with Police Chief Dan Hughes the District
was granted temporary approval. We WQuld like to take the appropriate steps to
make this permanent. Please . let me know if you need further information to
complete this process.
Thank$ again for your help on this issue.
Sincerely,
~
