SUBJECT: Authorize Hiring a Police Records Technician
DATE: September 4, 2007
INTRODUCTION:
The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Michelle Herrera as a probationary
Police Records Technician.
BACKGROUND:
Following the promotion of Darlene Bjerketvedt to Police Department Secretary, the Police Civil
Service Commission conducted the necessary recruitment and testing process to fill the position
of Police Records Technician. On August 6, the Commission certified an eligible register for the
position. The eligible register is composed of the following three individuals, listed in
alphabetical order:
Megan Blazevic
Michelle Herrera
April Jones
Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the
top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill
any vacancy. Staff recommends hiring Michelle Herrera for the position.
BUDGET IMPACT:
The funds exist within the Police Department budget.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP:
The hiring and promot~on of qualified individuals contributes to a vibrant, resilient and stable
City (Goal D).
AL TERNATIVES:
1. Authorize the hire.
2. Do not authorize the hire.
3. Table and provide direction to staff.
RECOMMENDATION:
Alternative #1. Staff recommends Council authorize hiring Michelle Herrera as a probationary
Police Records Technician.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary Police
Records Technician Michelle Herrera at Step E of Grade 3 ($16.732/hour) ofthe City's Non-
Union Pay Plan subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment physical and
psycholo gical examinations.
