Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Jessica Nikunen, Human Resource Technician SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Holly Chumas DATE: August 21, 2007 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Holly Chumas as a probationary police officer. BACKGROUND: The City Council authorized 47 sworn positions in the 2007 Police Department budget. This is consistent with the Department's workload analysis and staffing ratio of 1.5 officers per 1,000 residents. Currently there is one vacancy. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that created the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil Service Commission. . Holly Chumas . David Fritz~e . Ashley O'R,6urke i i Minnesota State St~tute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fi.11 any vacancy. I i VISIONING RELATIONSHIP Keeping the Shakopee Police Department fully staffed with qualified individuals helps support Goal B - a high quality of life for residents of Shakopee. AL TERNA TIVES: 1. Authorize the hire. 2. Do not authorize the hire. 3. Table and provide direction to staff. RECOMMENDATION: Alternative #1. Staff recommends Council authorize hiring Holly Chumas as a probationary police officer. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary police officer Holly Chumas at Step 2 of the current labor contract, at a monthly rate of $4,150.133, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment medical and psychological examinations.
