CITY OF SHAKO PEE s: 0.3,
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor & City Council CONSEr~T
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
Bruce Loney, Public Works Director
FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: August 8, 2007
SUBJECT: Trail overlay Project for 2007.
INTRODUCTION:
The Park Maintenance Division has $20,000.00 budgeted for trail maintenance and is
requesting $15,000 for overlaying a portion of the trail in the Upper Valley Drainage
Ditch near Scenic Heights Park.
BACKGROUND:
Staff budgets monies each year for the pavement preservation of the City's trail system.
This year staff used a new product called MacMat on the trail along Sarazin St. from 4th
Ave. to CSAH 16 at a cost of $5,000.00. This product is for trails that are structurally in
good shape but need a preservation treatment such as a seal-coat. MacMat is slurry that
encapsulates the aggregate so the surface is not as rough or sharp as a seal-coat and is
preferred by roller-blades and bicyclists.
Staff is requesting approval to use the remaining monies to overlay the portion of trail
from Hauer Trail to Scenic Heights Park in the Upper Valley Drainage Ditch. This
segment is in poor condition and staff is recommending a 2 inch overlay for additional
structure. Staff has received quotes and is recommending council accept the low quote
from Bituminous Roadways for 2,086 ft. of trail for $14,245.00.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Accept the low quote from Bituminous Roadways for 2,086 ft. of trail overlay for
$14,245.00.
2. Deny the request.
3. Table for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends alternative # 1.
ACTION REOUESTED:
Move to accept the low quote from Bituminous Roadways for 2,086 feet of trail overlay
for $14,245.00.
