CITY OF SHAKOPEE ~"'-lJ~ L\.fJ""\- "'" Police Department Memorandum S-f'r-\ ~uAJ-t TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Craig Robson, Captain SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Cortnie derson DATE: July 17, 2007 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Cortnie And rson as a probationary police officer. BACKGROUND: The City Council authorized 47 sworn positions in the 2007 Police Dep entbudget. This is consistent with the Department's workload analysis and staffing rat 0 of 1.5 officers per 1,000 residents. If the Council authorizes the police officer Ig earlier on this agenda, there will be one vacancy in the Department. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that freated the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil S rvice Commission. . Cortnie Anderson . Holly Chumas . Ashley O'Rourke Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Co ission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing uthority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. Staff recommends that Cortnie Anders. n be hired at Step 1 of the current police officer labor contract. The Police Department's request for approval to hire Cortnie Anderson as probationary police officer is consistent with the established City goals. BUDGET IMPACT: Funds exist in the Police Department budget for this position. Page 2 VISIONING RELATIONSHIP Keeping the Shakopee Police Department fully staffed with qualified individuals helps support Goal B - a high quality of life for residents of Shakopee. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Authorize the hire. 2. Do not authorize the hire. 3. Table and provide direction to staff. RECOMMENDATION: Alternative #1. Staff recommends Council authorize hiring Cortnie Anderson as a probationary police officer. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary ~ police officer Cortnie Anderson at Step 1 of the current labor contract, at a monthly rate of$3,830.892, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment medical and psychological examinations.
