From: Travis Karlen, Recreation Supervisor
Meeting Date: July 3, 2007
Subject: Feasibility Study to Evaluate Options for the Replacement of the
Waterslide at SandVenture Aquatic Park
INTRODUCTION
City Council is asked to authorize a feasibility study to determine options for replacing the
waterslide at SandVenture Aquatic Park.
DISCUSSION
As you are aware, we have programmed replacement of the waterslide into the CIP for
2008. The slide was installed in the 1980's, and has reached its life expectancy with the
fiberglass being fairly brittle.
In doing preliminary research on waterslide replacement costs as part of budget work, we
have been told by various waterslide manufacturers that replacing the waterslide has
many options and prices. For example:
. Replace the Flume in Current Configuration: This option would utilize the existing
structure, but the flume would need to be custom made, which would add costs. (Most
slides come in standard configurations.)
. Replace the Structure and Flume: This option would allow the slide configuration to be
modified, and perhaps better use the hill.
. Replace the Structure and Flume with Additional Enhancements: This option might
add another enhancement such as a tube slide or tower on top of the hill.
In order to have more accurate budget numbers, Council authorized us to seek proposals
for professional services to develop cost estimates and design the slide earlier this year.
After discussing the slide replacement, we are recommending only proceeding with the
cost estimate portion (feasibility study) at this time, and that USAquatics complete the
study. USAquatics designed the filtration system that was installed in 2000, and is very
knowledgeable of the current operational components of the aquatic park. The feasibility
study would include:
. Assessment of the existing site reviewing the pool plunge area structure, elevations,
suction chamber, flume pump and related dimensions.
. Replacement options including costs to replace as is, replace with a tower or two
slides, and replace with a upgrade which could be a tall tower or multiple slides.
. Meetings to discuss programming and slide layout.
. Analyses that would summarize the findings with multiple slide options and associated
budget estimates in a final bound report.
. Final feasibility presentation including data found and proposed options with related
budget estimates.
US Aquatics has proposed the work at a cost of $4,800 plus reimbursable. We are
proposing to fund these costs from the Recreation Fund's operating budget.
