CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Appointment - Director of Parks and Recreation
DATE: June 22, 2007
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to appoint Jamie M. Polley as Director of Parks and Recreation for
Shakopee.
BACKGROUND:
As Council is aware, Mark Themig submitted his letter of resignation in March as he had
accepted a new position with Scott County.
Advertisement was made for a slightly restructured position (facilities maintenance has
been transferred to other staff). Thirty-three applications were received.
An interview process was conducted, first narrowing seven semi-finalists down to three.
The three finalists meet with department heads, Park and Recreation staff, and the City
Administrator.
Based on those findings, we are recommending that Jamie M. Polley be appointed.
Ms. Polley holds a B.S. Degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of
Wisconsin-LaCrosse; she subsequently received a M.S. in Sports Management from Ball
State University in Muncie, Indiana. She worked for two years in the recreation division
of the Milwaukee Public Schools, and was responsible for operating five community
centers there. Since November, 2003, she has been Director of Parks, Recreation, and the
local cable access channel for the City of New London, Wisconsin.
She is available to start with the City on July 25th, which would give her approximately
one week to work with Mr. Themig as he is ending his employment with the City.
This is contingent upon the successful completion of routine background and physical
examinations, as those have not been completed as of this writing.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Ms. Polley has accepted the tentative offer, and has indicated a willingness to start at Step
G of Pay Grade 11 - $79,596.
She would be exempt from overtime eligibility, as are all Department Heads. She has
asked that she be allowed to start with one week of vacation "on the books".
RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend that Jamie Polley be hired as Director of Parks and Recreation for the City
of Shako pee, effective July 25,2007, at Step G, Grade 11 ($79,596), and with one week
of vacation accrued.
RELATIONSHIP TO VISIONING:
This supports Goal D - Vibrant, resilient and stable.
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize the hire of Jamie Polley as
Shakopee Director of Parks and Recreation at Step G, Grade 11 of the Employee Pay
Plan, with one week's accrued vacation, effective July 25,2007, contingentupon the
successful completion of routine background and physical examinations.
