CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Visioning Follow-up DATE: May 31, 2007 INTRODUCTION: The Council is asked to adopt amendments to the City's Mission Statement and Two Year Strategic Strategies, as discussed at a workshop on May 29th. BACKGROUND: On May 29t\ the City Council, six members of the Visioning Steering Committee, and City staff met to review a number of issues relating to the Strategic Visioning Initiative. The Initiative had been adopted in November, 2005. The consensus of that meeting was as follows: 1. MISSION STATEMENT: The Mission Statement was modified in this manner: "The mission of the City of Shako pee is to provide the opportunity to live, work, and play in a community with a proud past, promising future, and small town atmosphere within a metropolitan setting. The City ,rill prclvitle customer friendly, high flUedity public services that arc intended to meet the changing needs of its residents and the community at targc. " It was determined that the Mission Statement could be made more concise by eliminating the second sentence - it was felt that the second sentence would be better as a goal. The components of that have been incorporated into the Strategic Strategies, which is discussed later. 2. VISION STATEMENT: After much discussion, it was determined that the Vision Statement was accurate to leave as is. See Attachment "A". 3. STRATEGIC STRATEGIES: Formerly known as Two Year Goals, some parts of the ten strategic strategies were changed by those in attendance. These are listed on Attachment "B". The revised Strategic Statements represent my best understanding ofthe consensus of those in attendance - ifit is not representative of the majority of the Council, the Council should direct otherwise. Note that the "parties responsible"; "target dates/completed", and "addition notes" are not included. Upon adoption by Council, this will be discussed with staff, and brought back to Council for regular reports. We have tried to do this on an every other month basis, and will seek to continue that. RECOMMENDATION: The Council should discuss, and determine if there are modifications that are needed to the draft documents. If not, the Council should adopt the changes to the Mission Statement, and Two Year Strategic Statements. RELATIONSHIP TO VISIONING: This supports all of the Visioning Goals, A through E. ACTION REQUIRED: If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, adopt modifications to the City's Mission Statement, and Two Year Strategic Strategies, as described herein. tJUjL~ Mark McNeill City Administrator MM:th Attachment "A" VISION STATEMENT Vision Statement (adopted summer 2005): Twenty years from now Shakopee will be known and valued as a unique city...
