CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum CONSENT TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrato~J Authorization to Hire Mechanic's Apprentice FROM: DATE: May 9,2007 INTRODUCTION: The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Jesse Abraham as a Mechanic's Apprentice in the Public Works Department. BACKGROUND: The staff of the Public Works Department currently includes two mechanics and one mechanic's apprentice. The current apprentice, Scott Blom, has applied for and been hired as a Maintenance Operator with the Department, leaving a vacancy in the Mechanic's Apprentice position. On March 15, Council authorized staff to advertise the position and begin the hiring process. A total of 42 applications were received in response to the advertisement for this position. Seven candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of Public Works Supervisor Mike Hullander, Mechanic Gene J eurissen and myself. The interview panel is recommending that Jesse Abraham be hired to fill the position, based on his application, interview and reference checks. Mr. Abraham has completed the automotive courses that are part of Hennepin Technical College's two-year Automotive Technician degree and has been working as a mechanic at Wa- Co Repair in Waconia for the past two and a half years. VISIONING RELATIONSHIP: Hiring qualified individuals to provide service to Shakopee residents helps support Goal D - a vibrant, resilient and stable city. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that Jesse Abraham be hired as Mechanic's Apprentice at Step 1 of the current union contract ($16.473 per hour), contingent upon successful completion of a background / driver's license check and pre-employment physical/drug test and subject to the standard one- year probationary period. The anticipated start date for Mr. Abraham would be June 4,2007. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the hiring of Jesse Abraham as a Mechanic's Apprentice with the Public Works Department, at Step 1 of the current union contract, contingent upon the successful completion of the required pre-employment screenings.
