From: Mark Themig, Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Director

Meeting Date: May 1, 2007
Subject: Aquatic Park Renaming I
I
I
INTRODUCTION I
This agenda items seeks action from City Council to formally name the aquatic I
I
park the Shakopee "SandVenture" Aquatic Park. I
I
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION I
The aquatic park has been a part of the community since 1968. Over the years it I
I
has been called a pool, sand bottom pool, swim pond, and the Shakopee Aquatic I
Park. In 2007 the park will open with a brand new look. The park will have a I
I
new building, landscape, fence, shade structures, diving board, and playground I
area. With the new look, staff is interested in giving the park a new, fun and I
innovative identity. I
I
I
Other aquatic facilities around the metro have come up with innovative names
that showcase what their parks have to offer. In Eagan, there is "Cascade Bay"
which has cascading falls of water, high water slides and fun interactive play.
In Anoka County there is "Bunker Beach" which is in Bunker Hills Regional Park.
The water park features a wave pool, waterslide drop area, sand playground
area and adventure pool.

I Finally, in Ramsey County they have an innovative name which creatively I
I portrays the interactive features the park has to offer. This park named "Water I
Works" also has a creative logo which displays the fun of the park.

I These are just 3 examples of how an identity with a name and innovative logo I
I can market a park. I have attached an additional page of logos we have found I
I from Aquatic Parks around the country.
I A few months ago we challenged staff to come brainstorm some names for our
\ aquatic facility. We found that renaming the aquatic park was a huge challenge.
We wanted a name that was fun, but also captured the unique sand feature our
I park has to offer. The list of names suggested are:
I . Breezy Pines Family Aquatic Park
. Cattails Family Aquatic Park
I . Cool Waters Family Aquatic Park
. Exotic Aquatic Swim Arena
I . Golden Sands Family Aquatic Park
I . Goldfish Pond Family Aquatic Park
. Leapfrog Family Aquatic Park
I . Penguin Beach Family Aquatic Park
. Pine Haven Family Aquatic Park
I . Pine Valley Family Aquatic Park
I . SandVenture Family Aquatic Park
. Sandy Breeze Family Aquatic Park
I . Sandy Pines Family Aquatic Park
. Shakopee Aquatic Park
I . Shakopee Oasis Aquatic Park
1 . Shakopee Sand Bay Family Aquatic Park

RECOMMENDATION
At the March 26th Advisory Board meeting, staff brought the proposal to the
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to change the name of the Shakopee
Aquatic Park to SandVenture Aquatic Park, with the flexibility to add "Shakopee"
preceding the name or "of Shakopee" to the end of the name depending on use.
At that meeting, the Advisory Board asked staff to come back with logo options
for the name "SandVenture" before making a decision on the name, and
discussed other naming options.
At the April 23rd Advisory Board meeting, the Board reviewed naming options and
recommend to City Council to name the aquatic park Shakopee "SandVenture"
Aquatic Park, with the flexibility of where Shakopee and Aquatic Park are used in
the name. As part of the motion, the they also moved to recommend to Council
to use the logo option below for use in marketing and signage at the park:
Shakopee
...
Aquatic Park
With this second motion, the Board also asked that we review potential additions
to the logo, such as a palm tree, foot prints in the sand, or the sun. We are still
working on minor modifications that can be presented to you at your meeting.
