To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Travis Karlen, Recreation Supervisor
Meeting Date: May 1, 2007
Subject: Consideration of Aquatic Park Improvements, Project No. PR2006-3
INTRODUCTION
City Council is asked to consider additional improvements to the Aquatic Park with funding
from the project budget for the Aquatic Park Support building.
BACKGROUND
In October 2006 City Council authorized further research of costs associated with the
aquatic park building project enhancements including diving board replacement,
waterslide replacement, fence replacement, landscape and irrigation, sand play area, and
additional shade structures. At the April 3, 2007 meeting, Council authorized staff to move
forward with requests for proposals for the design of the Aquatic Park waterslide to be
budgeted in the 2008 CIP. At that meeting council also approved the use of funds from
the 2006 recreation fund for the replacement of the diving board.
DISCUSSION
The remaining project enhancements are fence replacement around the park, purchase
and installatiol'} of the sand play equipment, landscaping, irrigation, and additional shade
structures.
Proposed Additional Enhancements
. Irrigation $2,289
The Shakopee Lion's Club is committed to the upkeep and aesthetics of Lion's Park,
and has offered to install the irrigation system that would serve the new building as
part of their work keeping up the park. The club has a member that has prior
experience installing irrigation systems, and they did the current irrigation install
around the picnic shelters. The proposed cost is for the materials, including an
upgraded controller that would run the entire system.
. Fence Replacement
This enhancement would replace all fencing around the facility with black PVC coated
fence. Although still functional with the exception of a few holes, the existing fence
was installed in 1968, and replacing it would help with aesthetics. We received a price
to replace the fence as a change order, and a quote from Pass Fencing.
Change Order in Project: $28,331
Pass Fencing: $24,000, minus $6,500 change order credit $17,500
. Sand Play Structure $15,928
Addition of a sand play structure. The companies for the proposed purchases are
Progressive Design Playgrounds and Burke, both of which provide sand play
components. Burke has agreed to do the installation of the two company's products.
