SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Two Maintenance Operators

INTRODUCTION:
The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring oftwo Maintenance Operators in the Public
Works Department.
BACKGROUND:
The 2007 operating budget for the Public Works Department includes funding for two additional
Maintenance Operators - one for the street division and one for the parks division. These
positions are necessary in order to properly maintain the additional miles of streets and acres of
parkland added to the City in recent years.
Over 160 applications were received in response to the advertisement for this position. Nine
candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of Public Works Director Bruce Loney, Public
Works Supervisor Mike Hullander, Streets Supervisor Dave Rutt, Parks Supervisor Bill Egan
and myself. The interview panel is recommending that Chad Bonine and Kelly Rux be hired to
fill the two open positions.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP:
Hiring qualified individuals to provide service to Shakopee residents helps support Goal D - a
vibrant, resilient and stable city.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that Chad Bonine and Kelly Rux be hired as Maintenance Operators at Step 1
of the current union contract ($l7.735 per hour), contingent upon successful completion of a
background / driver's license check and pre-employment physical/drug test and subject to the
standard one-year probationary period. The anticipated start date for these two individuals
would be May 7, 2007.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the hiring of Chad Bonine and Kelly
Rux as Maintenance Operators with the Public Works Department, at Step 1 of the current union
contract, contingent upon the successful completion of the required pre-employment screenings.
